Standard EN SampleFurniture - Fixed height chairs - Safety and general requirements
Also Known As:
The relevant safety and general standards for fixed-height seating are outlined in AS 4688.1:2018. This standard relates to freestanding chairs that have upright, reclining, or reclinable backs and fixed, swivel, or rocking bottoms and are made to fit one or more people. For mobility, these bases may additionally have wheels, castors, or glides.
However, this guideline does not apply to all seating types. These include benches that are anchored to the ground or other comparable furnishings like those in theaters or stadiums. Swivel chairs with height adjustments are also not included and are protected by AS/NZS 4438. Additionally, student chairs used in classrooms and other educational settings are covered by AS/NZS 4610.2 and AS/NZS 3813, respectively.
It's crucial to remember that this set of standards is exempt from the ISO/IEC 17025 requirements for measurement uncertainty. The tests mentioned in this group of standards can be carried out on seating that can accommodate multiple people using the procedures outlined in EN 1728 and the loads and forces outlined in AS/NZS 4688.2.
The term "chair" as used in this standard refers to all fixed-height seating options, including stools and recliners.
