AS 3498:2020 is a standard that outlines the safety and public health requirements for various types of water heaters and hot water storage tanks in Australia. The purpose of this standard is to provide uniform requirements for regulatory authorities to ensure the basic safety and public health issues are met for these products. This standard covers various types of water heaters, including storage and heat-exchange water heaters, and hot-water storage tanks with an external energy source, among others. It applies to water heaters that use any type of heating, including electric resistance, gas, liquid or solid fuels, heat pumps, and solar energy.

This standard also applies to water heaters that are intended to supply water directly to sanitary fixtures for personal hygiene purposes, with the outlet temperature limited to no greater than 45°C or 50°C. However, this standard does not cover the durability of water heaters or hot-water supply systems and does not apply to certain products such as steam generators, sterilizers, washing machines, and hot-water supply systems solely intended for space heating, swimming pools, spa pools, or industrial processes. It is important to note that the installation of water heaters and hot-water supply systems is covered by the Plumbing Code of Australia and AS/NZS 3500.4.
