A standard known as AS/NZS 60335.2.7:2020 focuses on the security standards for domestic and similar electrical equipment, particularly washing machines. The standard applies to electric washing machines designed to clean fabrics and clothing, with rated voltages of no more than 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances.

The standard also contains standards for electrolyte-based electric washing machines, with additional specifications laid forth in Annex CC. For washing machines with a power-driven wringer, it offers recommendations in Annex DD on how to guarantee an appropriate degree of protection against electrical and thermal dangers.

The standard covers devices used in shops, light industry, farms, or communal spaces like apartment buildings and laundromats that are not intended for regular household usage but could nevertheless endanger the public.

Despite the fact that the standard addresses common risks connected to washing machines in and around the home, it does not take into account people, including children, who might have physical, sensory, or mental impairments that prevent them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction, or kids who are just playing with it.

The standard emphasizes that washing machines used in vehicles, ships, or aircraft may require additional requirements and that national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water supply authorities, and similar bodies may specify additional requirements in different countries.

It is significant to note that the standard does not apply to washing machines that are solely designed for industrial uses, appliances used in environments with unique conditions (such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres), or washing machines equipped with steam-generating devices that generate steam at a pressure higher than 50 kPa.
