AS 4041:2006 (R2016) is a standard that provides the minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, testing, inspection, and pre-commissioning of piping with internal or external pressure. It applies to different types of materials such as carbon, carbon-manganese, low alloy, and high alloy steels, ductile and cast iron, copper, aluminum, nickel, titanium, and alloys of these materials with specific requirements provided for each. The Standard excludes gas and liquid petroleum pipelines as these are covered by AS 2885 and gas distribution pipelines covered by AS 1697, and piping used for roof or floor drains, plumbing services, sewers, domestic water and gas reticulation, and low-pressure ventilation ducting.

The Standard applies specifically to pressure piping that can potentially cause significant harm to people, property or the environment due to exposure to hazards such as internal pressure causing an explosion or projectile, external pressure causing buckling and collapse or release of contents that are lethal, toxic, harmful, flammable, combustible, or pose a risk of injury or damage. It also provides guidance on the scope of the Standard, and how it may acquire legal standing in various circumstances. The Standard relies extensively on AS/NZS 3992, AS 4037, and AS 4458.
