Use of Reinforced Concrete for Small Swimming Pools

SKU166722498 Published by Australia Standards AS Publication Date1992-06-15 Pages CountPages12

For the structural design and construction of swimming pools built of in situ or pneumatically applied reinforced concrete, the AS 2783:1992 standard offers instructions. The standard is applicable to swimming pools with water that is routinely disinfected, has a pH of no less than 6.5, and has a salinity of no more than seawater. The pools covered by this standard have an overall length of 16.7 m or less and a surface area of 100 m2.

A few significant notes are also included in the standard. First, it states that the ocean has a salinity of 37,000 mg/L, whereas pools utilizing salt water chlorinators typically have a salinity of 6,000–4,000 mg/L. Second, it notes that small swimming pools typically have a design life of 20 to 30 years. As long as the supporting components are created in accordance with AS 3600 and movement and shrinkage are taken into account, the standard also permits its use for partially or entirely above-ground pools. Last but not least, the pool's maximum overall length, 16.7 meters, is roughly equivalent to one-third of an Olympic-sized pool when measured at the water's edge.
