The AS/NZS 60335.2.89:2002 standard aims to protect the safety of commercial refrigeration equipment with an integrated compressor or that is delivered in two components that must be assembled. The standard covers a variety of appliances, including blast chillers, blast freezers, service counters, self-service counters, refrigerator display and storage cabinets, and refrigerator trolley cabinets.

The standard focuses primarily on the typical risks connected to these kinds of products. It does not, however, address construction- and operation-related aspects that are covered by ISO standards. Appliances intended for use in automobiles, ships, aircraft, or in accordance with national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water authorities, transportation authorities, or similar entities may need to meet additional standards.

It's important to note that this standard does not cover household refrigerators, commercial ice-cream makers, industrial refrigeration systems, motor compressors, vending machines and other commercial dispensing appliances, cold temperature rooms, and multiple refrigerators with remote compressors.
