Standard ENTanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids
Also Known As:
The AS 1692:1989 standard specifies the design and construction requirements for tanks and their accessories used to store flammable and combustible liquids. The standard does not cover the installation of tanks or tanks used in road, rail, or marine applications, nor does it apply to fuel tanks for vehicles. It is specifically applicable to the storage of materials that are liquid at normal temperatures and pressures.
The standard includes six categories of tanks, ranging from small capacity tanks used primarily for oil fuel storage in domestic premises to larger tanks of any capacity typically erected on-site. The requirements outlined in the standard can be applied to tanks made of materials other than steel, although it primarily focuses on tanks constructed of low carbon steel or stainless steel. Glass-fibre reinforced plastics are recognized as an alternative material but are covered by other standards.
The standard emphasizes that its provisions may not be appropriate for the storage of liquids other than petroleum fuel or for tanks made of different materials. Any substitutions or deviations from the standard's requirements should be subject to specific approval. The standard also highlights the importance of providing specific information to the manufacturer to ensure the correct completion of the tank, as detailed in Appendix A.
