Standard Guide for Construction and Maintenance of Warning Track Areas on Athletic Fields

SKU112913338 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2012 Pages CountPages4

The ASTM F2270-12 (R2018) standard offers instructions for building and maintaining warning tracks on athletic grounds. On the edges of the playing field, there are surfaces known as warning tracks that serve to alert players to potential dangers or off-limits zones.

The warning track must be built and maintained in accordance with the standard so that players may feel the texture change without having to glance down at the ground. This is especially important because during play, players frequently have their eyes fixed on the ball. Additionally, there shouldn't be any dangers on the warning track that might endanger players.

The need for a level surface with excellent footing in the warning track areas is also covered by the standard. The surface texture needs to stand out from the surrounding playing surface enough for the player to easily feel it. In situations when the primary playing surface is a skinned area, like in softball, turfed warning track areas may be used. Avoid irregularities, difficult terrain, foliage, rubbish, and other elements that interfere with a reliable warning track.

Both construction and maintenance techniques are included in the booklet. Material characteristics, debris-free conditions, surface drainage, and surface elevation should all be taken into account during construction. Edging, dragging, rolling, watering, controlling vegetation, and clearing away stones and debris are some maintenance procedures.

The standard is meant to assist individuals who are engaged in the planning, building, and upkeep of baseball and softball fields, as well as other play places where warning tracks are necessary. To guarantee the security and functionality of warning track regions, it offers advice on material selection and administration procedures. However, it ignores man-made warning tracks such as paved or rubberized surfaces as well as artificial turf. The local soil types, climate, level of play, budget, and management personnel's skills should all be taken into account when choosing construction and maintenance methods.
