Standard ENStandard Practice for Creating Surface Appearance Changes in Pile Yarn Floor Covering from Foot Traffic
Also Known As:
ASTM D6119-19 is a standard practice that describes how to apply foot traffic to pile yarn floor coverings to change the surface look. This exercise is intended to mimic the surface appearance changes that result from foot traffic on floor coverings in real-world situations.
This standard, which is applicable to all carpet varieties intended for home or commercial use, focuses on surface appearance changes brought on by matting, flattening, or changes to the structure of pile fibers. It should nevertheless be understood that this method is not meant to cause the phenomenon known as "pile reversal" or "watermarking."
The procedure entails exposing the flooring to enough foot movement in a controlled laboratory environment. It does not replicate surface alterations brought on by scuffing, pivoting, rolling motion, or stair traffic.
With the consent of the supplier and the buyer, this standard may serve as the foundation for creating purchasing specifications. It should be noted that a different test technique, D7330, is available for evaluating changes in surface appearance using the Carpet and Rug Institute Reference Scales.
