Standard ENStandard Test Method for Pile Thickness of Finished Level Pile Yarn Floor Coverings
Also Known As:
A method for calculating the pile thickness of level pile yarn floor coverings is provided by the ASTM D6859-18 standard. Given that variations in pile thickness can have an impact on these floor coverings' appearance and functionality, this test is helpful in maintaining both quality and cost during manufacturing. The standard is regarded as adequate for acceptance testing of commercial shipments since it is often used in the industry and has acceptable between-laboratory precision.
According to the standard, comparison tests should be carried out to see if there is a statistical bias if there are notable variations in test findings between two or more laboratories. These tests should use homogeneous samples drawn at random from the same batch of components as the initial testing samples and distributed equally among each laboratory. Use a statistical test for unpaired data with a predetermined probability threshold to compare the test results from the various facilities. If a bias is discovered, it must be determined what caused it and fixed, or future tests on that material must be altered to account for the bias.
A thickness measurement device with a stationary surface (platen) and a circular pressure foot is used in the test procedure outlined in the standard. It is possible to raise the instrument vertically above the platen. Only finished level loop, cut pile, and cut & loop constructions with tuft heights less than 0.25 in. (6 mm) are subject to the standard.
