Standard EN SampleStandard Specification for Universal Design of Fitness Equipment for Inclusive Use by Persons with Functional Limitations and Impairments
Also Known As:
The specifications for designing and producing exercise equipment suitable for people with functional limitations and impairments are outlined in the ASTM F3021-17 standard. When used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, the standard aims to promote the functionality and safety of these items. Assistive technologies like wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, prostheses, other forms of communication, and cell phones are also covered in addition to conventional exercise equipment. It also specifies color contrast guidelines for the benefit of people with visual impairments.
Beyond what is specified in previous ASTM standards for commercial exercise equipment, the standard sets additional requirements. Its objective is to improve user independence and access for people with disabilities. The standard is intended for products made for people ages 13 and older to use indoors in a business setting. It does not, however, categorize products that fulfill the criterion as appropriate for medical or fitness rehabilitation, as those products must adhere to different applicable international or national requirements.
The specification recognizes that not all forms of assistive technology will work with every design of exercise equipment and that it cannot fully satisfy the needs of all potential users. This specification should be used by designers in conjunction with other ASTM fitness equipment standards and the related test procedures. It is important to keep in mind that new specifications are currently being developed for particular types of equipment, including strength equipment, bicycles, ellipticals, and treadmills.
