ASTM F2075-20 is a standard specification that specifies the standards for engineered wood fiber used as a playground safety surface. The goal of this standard is to provide minimum requirements for parameters such as particle size, consistency, purity, and drainability. It should be noted that adherence to this specification does not guarantee injury prevention.
To assure the quality of engineered wood fiber, the standard includes three tests: sieve test analysis, hazardous metal test, and magnetic and nonmagnetic tramp metal test. To determine the particle size distribution, sieve test analysis employs balances, sieves, sieve shakers, and ovens. The presence of dangerous metals such as antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and selenium is determined by the hazardous metal test. To detect undesired metal impurities, an industrial grade magnetic wand with a cylindrical neodymium iron-boron rare earth magnet is used in the magnetic and nonmagnetic tramp metal test.
The specification further stipulates that engineered wood fiber that meets the requirements of this standard must conform with Specification F1292 when used in the defined use zone of playgrounds, as described by Specification F1487. It is crucial to emphasize, however, that compliance with this specification does not guarantee injury prevention.
Furthermore, the standard warns about the possible risks of mercury and recommends caution while handling mercury or mercury-containing items. It further emphasizes that selling mercury or mercury-containing products may be illegal under state law.
