A European standard known as BS EN 15330-1:2013 outlines the specifications for artificial turf surfaces that are primarily made for outdoor use in a variety of sports. Depending on its primary sporting application, the standard divides surfaces into five categories: tennis, multi-sport use, rugby union training, association football, and hockey. The standard's objective is to ensure that these surfaces meet the performance, durability, product identification, and facility testing requirements.

The specification is designed for surfaces used in public, academic, and recreational sporting environments. It's crucial to remember that sports governing bodies may have their own requirements that deviate from this standard for professional and elite levels of competition. It is advisable for facility developers to choose surfaces that adhere to the strict specifications of the level of competition.

Two elements make up the standard. The first section outlines the tests that must be conducted on items in a lab to confirm that they can deliver the required athletic performance and player/surface interaction, as well as being made from materials of acceptable quality. The specifications for installed surfaces are described in the second section to make sure they are appropriate for the intended usage in terms of sports performance and player-surface interaction.

It's vital to note that the International Rugby Board's IRB Regulation 22 and related performance specifications for synthetic turf surfaces must also be followed by surfaces intended for rugby union contests. The standard further suggests that laboratories be accredited to EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the pertinent test techniques listed in the standard when independent third-party testing is necessary to determine conformity.
