BS EN ISO 3691-4:2020 is a safety standard that specifies the safety requirements and verification methods for driverless industrial trucks and their systems. The standard applies to all types of driverless industrial trucks, including automated guided vehicles, autonomous mobile robots, automated guided carts, and more. It covers trucks equipped with automatic modes, manual modes, maintenance modes, and the capability to transport riders. However, it does not apply to remotely controlled trucks or trucks solely guided mechanically.

The standard defines driverless industrial trucks as powered trucks designed to operate automatically, with a system comprising a control system (which can be separate from or part of the truck), guidance means, and a power system. It provides safety requirements and verification methods for all significant hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events during all stages of the truck's life (as listed in Annex B) relevant to the truck's intended use and foreseeable misuse by the manufacturer.

The standard excludes requirements for additional hazards that can occur in severe conditions, nuclear environments, public zones, public road operations, potentially explosive environments, military applications, specific hygienic requirements, ionizing radiation environments, transportation of people, and handling dangerous loads. Additionally, the standard does not contain safety requirements for trailers towed behind trucks or elevated operator trucks, and it is not applicable to trucks manufactured before the date of its publication.

Lastly, the standard highlights the significance of the operating zone's condition, and Annex A specifies methods for preparing the operating zone to eliminate the associated hazards. Requirements for power sources are not covered in the standard.
