Standard EN SampleTextile Floor Coverings: Guidelines for Installation and Use on Stairs
Also Known As:
For the installation and usage of textile floor coverings on stairs in both residential and commercial contexts, the BS ISO 13746:2019 standard offers recommendations. It applies to all textile items, including those sold as tiles, whether they have a pile- or non-pile-use surface.
The focus of the standard is on carpets that are meant to be installed without the use of protective stair nosings. The general usage class dictates the suitability of carpets that do need protective stair nosings. It is important to remember that local bye-laws and statutes may regulate the usage of stair nosings and edges in public spaces.
The guideline also takes into account the possibility of rooms with one or two steps separating different levels in some split-level residences. While not a standard stairway, this circumstance does show some key differences, including bigger steps and the flexibility to stretch the carpet over the stairs either in the machine direction or the across-machine direction. On the other hand, a stairway requires that the carpet be laid with the pile facing the stairs for appropriate installation.
