Users can design aesthetically pleasing and sensible kitchen layouts that take into account ergonomic and financial factors by following the guidelines provided in ISO 3055.

The guidelines offered by ISO 3055 address a variety of topics, including component part sizes, the precise spaces occupied by each piece of equipment, the placement of utility connections (for water, gas, drainage, and electricity), and component combinations. It underscores the importance of the modular coordination principle in building design and the existence of local or national laws governing the provision of utilities and the care for those with special needs.

The 1985 version of the standard is replaced by the most recent one, BS ISO 3055:2021. Clarifications of the scope, new terminology and definitions for kitchen appliances and furniture, updated normative references, and more specific specifications for coordinating sizes are all part of the changes. Notably, the standard no longer includes Annexes A and B.
