BS EN 752:2017 is a standard that provides a comprehensive framework for the design, construction, maintenance, operation, and rehabilitation of drain and sewer systems outside of buildings. The standard specifies the functional requirements for achieving the objectives of such systems as well as the principles for strategic and policy activities related to planning, design, installation, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation. The scope of the standard covers all drain and sewer systems from where wastewater exists a building, roof drainage system, or paved area to the point where it discharges into a wastewater treatment plant or receiving water body, including drains and sewers below buildings not forming part of the drainage system.

The standard is aimed at several parties such as management and operators of sewers, private and public organizations involved in urban planning and development, contractors, and designers of sewage systems, sewer management bodies, public health and safety departments, and environmentalists. The imperative goal of a sewer system is to collect and eliminate waste matter in a systematic manner, ensuring hygienic conditions, and avoiding flooding or collapse of the building.

BS EN 752:2017 supersedes the previous version, BS EN 752:2008, and includes some technical changes, including the alignment of terminology with BS EN 16323:2014, the transfer of text relating to the determination of performance requirements, and design criteria to Clause 5. The physical and hydraulic design requirements have been moved to new Annexes to provide a more coherent narrative. A new Annex B on rehabilitation approaches has been added.
