A European standard that addresses the safety criteria for gas, oil, and solid-fuel burning appliances is BS EN 60335-2-102:2006+A2:2016. It concentrates specifically on electrically connected appliances, with rated voltages of up to 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances.

The standard addresses a number of electrical safety issues as well as other safety concerns for this equipment. But it also adds that only if the appliance complies with the pertinent product standard for fuel-burning appliances will all safety concerns, including noise emissions, be covered. The applicable Part 2 of the EN 60335 standard must also be complied with by appliances that use electric heating sources.

For appliances and machinery with moving parts intended for commercial usage, Annex ZE provides additional criteria. Central heating boilers, commercial catering equipment, kitchen appliances, laundry and cleaning appliances, room heaters, warm air heaters, and water heaters are a few examples of appliances covered by this standard.

The goal of the standard is to address frequent risks connected to home appliances. However, it disregards people, such as kids, whose physical, sensory, or mental capacities, as well as a lack of experience and information, may preclude them from using the device safely without supervision or guidance. Additionally, it excludes appliances used in industrial settings or in environments with unique characteristics, such as those with an explosive or corrosive atmosphere.

It is significant to note that appliances used in automobiles, ships, aircraft, and other particular situations could require additional specifications. Additionally, extra standards could be stipulated by national health authorities, labor protection agencies, and other comparable bodies in various nations. The standard needs to be used in conjunction with other applicable standards for controls and appliances that are indicated in Annexes ZAA and ZBB.
