A European standard called BS EN 12520:2015 specifies the minimal standards for the security, toughness, and longevity of residential seats for adults. All domestic seating types are covered by this standard, with the exception of ranked seating, non-domestic seating, office chairs, chairs for educational institutions, outdoor seating, and linked seating that is covered by distinct European Standards. The materials used for upholstery, the use of castors, reclining and tilting systems, seat height adjustment mechanisms, electrical safety, and ergonomics are not covered. The tests outlined in the standard are based on people weighing up to 110 kg sitting.
