Playground Equipment and Surfacing: General Safety Requirements and Test Methods
Also Known As:
The general safety requirements and test procedures for playground surfacing and equipment are described in BS EN 1176-1:2017. With extra safety standards for particular pieces of equipment defined in later portions of the standard, it specifically applies to permanently installed public playground equipment and surfacing.
The standard's goals are to promote activities and features that give kids useful experiences for dealing with circumstances outside of the playground and to guarantee that kids are as safe as possible when using playground equipment. The Toys Safety Directive and EN 71 do not apply to playground equipment meant for children to use individually or in groups; hence, these items are not covered by the standard. However, aside from products that are obtained commercially, adventure playgrounds are typically not covered by this criterion.
When operating the equipment as intended or in a manner that can be reasonably anticipated, BS EN 1176-1 defines requirements to safeguard children from risks that they might not be able to see. Although it does not include the use of electricity in play equipment, users are recommended to abide by all applicable national and European standards and laws in such circumstances. Additionally, the regulation does not completely address excessive UV radiation exposure or play equipment used in water.
