Three techniques are described in the BS EN 12616:2013 standard for determining how quickly water penetrates sports surfaces. For synthetic, textile, synthetic turf, and bonded mineral surfaces, use Method A. While Method C was created exclusively for unbound mineral surfaces, Method B is appropriate for natural turf.
The standard highlights that filled synthetic turf and unbound mineral surfaces perform best in laboratory tests, which give a more accurate representation of their performance. This suggests that the entire performance characteristics of these kinds of surfaces may not be fully captured in field tests.
