An established set of guidelines for horizontal closed ice-cream freezers is the goal of the BS EN 16901:2016 standard. The standard is primarily concerned with classifying these freezers and outlining the specifications and testing circumstances they must adhere to. Note that these ice-cream freezers use static air cooling using a skin evaporator instead of an evaporator fan, which distinguishes them from supermarket segment freezers. Furthermore, remote or secondary system-type cabinets are not covered by the standard; only integral-type refrigeration systems are. The standard states that transparent lid freezers' net volumes should be in proportion to the total display area (Net Volume/TDA = 0.35 m) and that ice cream freezers under its purview should have a net volume of 600 liters or less.
