A safety standard known as CAN/CSA-E335-2-19-94 (R1999) applies to motor-operated rechargeable battery-powered shavers, hair clippers, and devices used for massage, manicure, pedicure, and other related tasks. It also includes their battery assemblies and charging, which is accomplished by connecting to the supply mains.

The guideline covers items like equipment used by laypeople in stores and farms that aren't meant for everyday household usage but could nonetheless endanger the public. However, using tools like hair clippers for animal shearing or trimming only falls under the purview of personal safety.

When used with a specific accessory, multipurpose appliances covered by this standard that are also covered by another IEC standard shall adhere to that standard to the extent that it makes sense to do so. The guideline does not take into account the unique dangers that may exist in nurseries and other settings where small children, elderly or infirm people, or both, are present unattended.

Appliances designed to be operated directly from the supply mains (covered by a separate Part 2), appliances for medical use, and appliances meant for use in areas with particular conditions like corrosive or explosive atmospheres are not included in the standard. Appliances used in cars, aboard ships or aircraft, or in tropical regions may need to meet additional standards. It also emphasizes the fact that in many nations, extra standards may be specified by national health authorities and labor protection authorities.
