The IEC Standard 60730-2-9 (version 4:2015 combined with Amendment 1:2018), commonly known as Automatic Electrical Controls, Part 2-9: Particular Requirements for Temperature Sensing Controls, is adopted in the CAN/CSA-E60730-2-9:18 standard.

The requirements for automatic electrical temperature sensing controls used in equipment like heating and air conditioning systems and other similar applications are outlined in this standard. The controls utilized with various energy sources, such as electricity, gas, oil, solid fuel, and solar thermal energy, are covered. The standard is applicable to controls used in both household and business settings, as well as in public locations such as offices, stores, hospitals, farms, and industrial settings.

The scope of this standard also covers temperature sensor controls that are a component of an ISO 16484-compliant building automation control system. Unless expressly stated in the applicable equipment standard, it does not apply to controls designed only for industrial process applications.

The standard covers the testing of temperature sensing controllers as well as their inherent safety, operating values, running times, and operating sequences. Thermostats for boilers, fan controls, temperature limiters, and thermal cut-outs are a few examples of the controls that are addressed. The functional safety of low-complexity temperature sensing controls and systems is also covered.

The standard also covers the electrical security of temperature-sensitive controls with non-electric outputs, such as controls for refrigerant flow and gas.

The requirements for manual switches that are not a part of an automatic control are not covered by the standard because they are covered by IEC 61058-1. The rated voltage limits for temperature sensor controls that are powered by AC and DC are also specified.
