Standard ENMechanical Couplings for Drain, Waste, and Vent Pipe and Sewer Pipe
Also Known As:
CSA B602:20 is the seventh edition of the standard that governs mechanical couplings for drain, waste, and vent pipe and sewer pipe. It replaces previous editions published in 2016, 2010, 2005, 1999, 1990, and 1988. The major changes in this new edition include revisions to chemical composition requirements, clarification of test pressure for size-transition couplings, addition of new size couplings to tables, removal of a figure from the annex, and addition of a new clause to the annex.
The scope of the standard covers mechanical couplings used to join pipes and fittings in non-pressure drain, waste, and vent (DWV) piping systems and sewer piping systems, both inside and outside buildings, as well as above ground and underground. It specifies requirements for different types of couplings, including Type 1, which join pipes of the same or different materials or sizes and include a center stop and an external shield; Type 2, which allow for a center stop and/or shear ring but are not required; Type 3, used specifically for hubless cast iron pipe and fittings; and Type 4, which are elastomeric bellows expansion joint couplings that join pipes of the same or different materials or sizes and incorporate pipe stops.
The standard also provides a list of pipe and pipe-fitting materials that may be joined using these mechanical couplings, including fibrocement, cast iron, concrete, copper, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polyvinylchloride (PVC), galvanized steel, and vitrified clay. It should be noted that this standard does not cover the joining of pipes and fittings with bell and spigot ends that use an elastomeric gasket seal. Users are also advised to refer to other existing standards for different types of couplings or coupling materials.
