Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Part 2: Particular Requirements for Appliances for Skin or Hair Care

SKU911474513 Published by Canadian Standards Association CSA Publication Date1994 Pages CountPages59

Appliances used to care for human or animal skin or hair must adhere to the safety standard CAN/CSA-E335-2-23-94 (R1999). The standard explicitly covers heating-element-containing equipment as well as electric heaters for non-electric skin- or hair-care products. The scope of this standard also applies to appliances with steam- or spray-generating components.

Hair dryers, hand dryers, permanent wave appliances, curling irons, curling combs, facial saunas, and similar devices are examples of appliances that comply with this specification. This criterion also applies to appliances that aren't made for typical household usage but could potentially endanger the public. These tools, such as those used by hairdressers in retail establishments, light industries, or farms, are taken into account when determining the applicability of this standard.

It is crucial to remember that this guideline does not address the unique dangers posed in nurseries or other locations where infants, children, the elderly, or people with disabilities are present unattended. To maintain safety in these situations, additional measures could be required.

Appliances made specifically for industrial use or those destined for environments with unique characteristics, including corrosive or explosive atmospheres, are exempt from the standard's requirements. The criteria for shavers, hair clippers, and other appliances are covered in a separate Part 2. Additionally, this requirement does not apply to products designed for medicinal use.

It is important to note that certain situations or safety issues may necessitate additional criteria for appliances intended for use in cars, ships, aircraft, or tropical regions. Furthermore, additional requirements beyond those mentioned in this standard may be specified by national health authorities and authorities in charge of labor protection in several countries.
