SKU916197935 Published by Canadian Standards Association CSA Publication Date1994 Pages CountPages75

"Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Part 2: Particular Requirements for Appliances for Heating Liquids" is the title of the CAN/CSA-E335-2-15-94 (R1999) standard. The electric water boilers covered by this standard include kettles, coffee makers, espresso makers, egg boilers, milk heaters, feeding bottle heaters, pressure cookers, cooking pans, slow cookers, yogurt makers, wash boilers, livestock feed boilers, sterilizers, and glue pots with water jackets. Fixed-water boilers are also included in the specification.

Appliances intended for use in stores, light industries, farms, and other non-household settings are included in the scope of this standard because they could endanger the general public. However, it does not cover specific risks that might be present in nurseries, play areas, or other locations with young children or vulnerable people. In certain situations, additional restrictions can be required.

The scope of this standard specifically excludes a number of different types of appliances. These include frying pans and deep fat fryers (covered under a separate Part 2), storage water heaters (covered under a separate Part 2), instantaneous water heaters (covered under a separate Part 2), high-frequency heating appliances, electrode-type appliances, dry or steam pressure sterilizers, portable immersion heaters, appliances for medical use, and only combustible appliances.

The standard also mentions that it can act as a guide for appropriate standards and testing for such appliances until an IEC standard for equipment for heating liquids for commercial catering applications is published. Appliances intended for use in cars, aboard ships or aircraft, or in tropical regions may need to meet additional standards. It is also vital to keep in mind that many nations have extra standards that are outlined by national water supply, labor, and health agencies.
