Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-23: Particular Requirements for Appliances for Skin or Hair Care
Also Known As:
A standard known as CAN/CSA-E60335-2-23-05 (R2013) outlines the safety standards for electrical devices used for domestic and other uses that are meant to care for skin or hair. The standard is applicable to appliances with a maximum rated voltage of 250 V. It replaces the previous edition that was released in 1994 and adopts the CEI/IEC Standard 60335-2-23 (fifth edition, 2003-01).
The standard's scope covers a variety of equipment, including hairdryers, hand dryers, facial saunas, curling combs, curling irons, and permanent-wave appliances. It also includes appliances with spray- or steam-producing components. The guideline also addresses typical risks associated with domestic use and includes machines used in hair salons.
The guideline, however, does not take into account young children playing with the device or the unattended usage of machines by elderly or infirm people. Additionally, it does not apply to equipment used only for industrial purposes, equipment used in environments with unique conditions (such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres), shavers and hair clippers, equipment that emits UV and IR radiation, equipment that heats saunas, or equipment designed for medical use.
It is significant to note that extra standards, as well as particular requirements stated by national health authorities, authorities in charge of labor protection, and similar authorities in other countries, may be necessary for appliances used in automobiles, ships, or aircraft.
