For timers and time switches used in homes and other comparable applications, the CAN/CSA-E730-2-7-94 (R2013) standard offers standards and regulations. According to the standard, these timers and time switches may make use of a variety of fuels, including electricity, gas, oil, solid fuel, and solar thermal energy. Devices that only display the current time or the passage of time are not covered by the standard.

Multifunctional controls with an integrated timing function that cannot be validated as a separate timing device are not covered by the standard. Additionally, it does not applicable to time-delay switches covered by IEC 669-2-3. It does, however, apply to timers used with, on, or in connection with home appliances and other similar equipment. Additionally, timers for appliances covered by IEC 335 are applicable.

The specification also includes mechanically or electrically integrating manual controls with timers. IEC 328 must be followed for manual switches that are not part of an automatic control.

The standard applies to controls that have a rated voltage of no more than 660 V and a rated current of no more than 63 A in terms of electrical requirements. The response value of a control's automatic action, which depends on how the control is mounted in the apparatus, is not taken into account, though. If the response value affects the user's or the environment's safety, it must adhere to the value specified in the relevant household equipment standard or as decided by the manufacturer.

The standard also states that it is taking into account the Appendix H criteria for electronics.
