Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Part 2: Particular Requirements for Shavers, Hair Clippers and Similar Appliances

SKU919485763 Published by Canadian Standards Association CSA Publication Date1994 Pages CountPages36

The safety of home and related electrical appliances, particularly shavers, hair clippers, and other like devices, is the emphasis of the CAN/CSA-E335-2-8-94 (R2004) standard. Appliances with a rated voltage of up to 250 V must adhere to the specification. It also comprises motorized devices used for pedicures, manicures, and other similar procedures. Even though they are not designed for typical household usage, such as those used by laypeople in shops and on farms, this standard covers equipment that could potentially endanger the public. Examples include tools for hairdressers and clippers for shearing or cutting hair from animals. The standard addresses typical risks connected to these equipment that are present in and around the house for all people. However, it does not take into account the possibility of young children playing with the equipment or the use of appliances by elderly or infirm people without adult supervision.

The standard also mentions the possibility of extra standards being required for appliances meant for use in automobiles, ships, or airplanes, as well as for appliances meant for use in tropical regions. It recognizes that many nations have particular standards laid down by national regulatory bodies such as labor protection agencies, health authorities, and others.

It's crucial to remember that this standard does not apply to appliances designed for use in environments with unique requirements, like those with corrosive or explosive atmospheres. Additionally, it excludes items like rechargeable battery-powered shavers, massagers, and medical equipment because those are covered by different standards (IEC 335-2-19, IEC 335-2-32, and IEC 601, respectively).
