Decorative fuel-effect gas appliances
Also Known As:
The specifications and test procedures for decorative fuel-effect gas appliances are laid out in the DIN EN 509 standard. These devices are created to mimic a solid fuel fire and are just meant to be aesthetic, not to provide heat. The standard is applicable to appliances that have a natural draught burner, either with or without an ignition burner, and a nominal heat input of up to 20 kW.
The standard explicitly addresses BAS appliances, which are made to fit inside non-combustible fireplace recesses or builder's openings. In Annex F, further specifications for appliances of type BBS are listed. The standard specifies specifications in Annex A for ornamental fuel-effect gas appliances that can be fitted with or without a flue box beneath a non-combustible canopy.
However, the DIN EN 509 standard does not apply to appliances that employ mechanical methods to supply combustion air and/or remove combustion products, such as those that use catalytic combustion. Additionally, the standard only applies to appliances that are meant to undergo type testing. It excludes topics like quality control procedures, production testing, and certificates of conformity for auxiliary equipment.
Since the covered appliances are only designed for decoration, the standard does not address criteria for energy efficiency.
