Synthetic Surfaces for Outdoor Sports Areas - Specification
Also Known As:
The specifications for synthetic surfaces used in outdoor sporting facilities are laid out in the DIN EN 14877 standard. This standard covers synthetic surfaces for multi-sport, tennis, track and field, and athletic uses.
There are two sections to the standard. To ensure that synthetic surfaces meet the standards for sports performance and player-surface interaction, the first section outlines the laboratory testing procedures that must be used. Additionally, it guarantees that the surfaces are constructed of acceptable-quality materials. The specifications for installed surfaces are described in the second section to guarantee that the sporting performance and player-surface interaction characteristics are appropriate for the intended purpose.
It is advised that the testing laboratory be certified in order to guarantee standard adherence. Top-tier athletic facilities are not covered by the standard since they must follow IAAF (International Association of Athletic Federations) guidelines. Furthermore, synthetic turf surfaces are not included because they have their own unique standard (EN 15330-1).
