The safety standards for electric ironers used in both commercial and domestic settings are covered by the standard IEC 60335-2-44:2021. The specification covers irons with rated voltages up to 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances. It encompasses a range of ironers, including trouser presses, rotary ironers, mangles, and ironing presses.
This standard's goals are to protect users' safety and eliminate risks that might occur while ironers are in use. Although it takes into account ordinary household risks, it does not take into account youngsters playing with the device or anyone with impaired physical, sensory, or mental capacities. For appliances used in automobiles, ships, and aircraft, as well as in compliance with national health, labor protection, and other comparable authorities, additional standards may be required.
Certain types of ironers, including multi-person rotary ironers, those used in hazardous environments, those only intended for industrial use, IEC 60335-2-3-compliant electric irons, and battery-operated machines, are exempt from the requirements of the standard.
The standard's fourth edition has technical updates over the third edition and is compliant with IEC 60335-1:2020. Among these changes are the conversion of several remarks to normative text, the exclusion of battery-operated equipment, and the addition of upper and lower temperature restrictions for accessible surfaces.
Unless otherwise noted, it should be used in conjunction with the most recent edition of IEC 60335-1 and any revisions to guarantee conformity with the standard. The sixth edition (2020) of IEC 60335-1 served as the foundation for this edition of IEC 60335-2-44.
