Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-89: Particular Requirements for Commercial Refrigerating Appliances and Ice-Makers with an Incorporated or Remote Refrigerant Unit or Motor-Compressor
Also Known As:
An in-built or remote refrigerant unit or motor-compressor is required for commercial refrigeration appliances, including ice makers, according to the safety standard IEC 60335-2-89:2019. The standard is applicable to several appliances, including blast chillers, service counters, refrigerator-based display and storage cabinets, refrigerator-based trolley cabinets, and commercial ice producers.
The standard covers frequent risks connected to these appliances, such as those caused by R-744 and flammable refrigerants. However, it does not apply to equipment employing refrigerants with a toxicity grade of B or those whose mass of flammable refrigerant exceeds the limits stated.
It is crucial to remember that the standard does not address aspects of the design and functionality of refrigeration units that are covered by ISO standards. Furthermore, certain specifications can be needed for appliances used in automobiles, ships, or airplanes, or they might be mandated by national health authorities, labor protection agencies, water supply authorities, or other similar authorities in other nations.
Appliances that use flammable refrigerant in transcritical refrigeration systems, home refrigeration systems, commercial refrigeration systems, vending machines, commercial ice cream appliances, cold temperature rooms, and multiple refrigeration chambers with a remote motor-compressor are not covered by the standard.
The standard's third version, released in 2019, offers technical improvements and adjustments in line with the fifth edition (Ed 5.2) of Part 1. Requirements for commercial ice makers and appliances with a remote refrigerant unit have been introduced, and several subclauses have been renumbered. Also included are installation guidelines, pressure tests, and supplementary specifications for equipment employing dangerous refrigerants.
The newest version of IEC 60335-1 and its revisions are to be utilized in conjunction with IEC 60335-2-89:2019. The material of two corrigenda from September 2019 and August 2021 is incorporated into the standard.
