A safety standard known as IEC 60335-2-102:2017 primarily targets gas, oil, and solid fuel-burning appliances with electrical connections used for domestic and related uses. With the idea that all safety standards relating to fuel-burning appliances are also met, the standard addresses the electrical safety and other pertinent safety features of this equipment. Central heating boilers, commercial catering equipment, kitchen appliances, laundry and cleaning appliances, room heaters, warm air heaters, and water heaters are a few examples of appliances covered by this standard.

Appliances made specifically for industrial use or those used in places with unique characteristics, including corrosive or explosive atmospheres, are exempt from the norm. Additionally, it makes no mention of the safety of people with impairments, people who lack expertise or skills in utilizing the appliances, or kids who play with them. Appliances used in automobiles, ships, or aircraft might need to meet additional specifications.

The standard's second version, which was released in 2017, has undergone several technological updates and modifications from the first edition. For appliances with a flat surface that can accommodate a cup, for instance, a spillage test is added. A few remarks have been removed or added as normative text, along with the renumbering of terms and definitions. The standard was created in accordance with ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2, and is used in conjunction with IEC 60335-1 and its modifications.

National committees are urged to provide equipment makers and testing organizations between 12 and 36 months after the standard's publication to adapt to the new criteria and carry out the appropriate tests.
