Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-35: Particular Requirements for Instantaneous Water Heaters
Also Known As:
A safety standard called IEC 60335-2-35:2012+A1:2016+A2:2020 especially addresses the specifications for electric instantaneous water heaters used in homes and other settings. The standard applies to water heaters that function below boiling point and have a rated voltage of no more than 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances. It extends its reach to encompass appliances used outside the home, such as in stores, light industries, and farms, that could pose risks to the general public. This includes appliances with exposed heating elements.
The standard aims to address common water heater risks found in and around homes, but it does not fully take into account people, including children, who might have physical, sensory, or mental disabilities that prevent them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction. Additionally, it does not take into account kids using the equipment.
The standard's fourth version from 2002 and any updates since then have been replaced by this fifth edition. The addition of Annex R, requirements for water heaters with programmable electronic circuits, and extra requirements for water heaters are some of the notable changes in this edition. Other modifications include the conversion of some comments to normative language and the removal of notes in specific sections.
National committees are urged to give equipment manufacturers and testing facilities time to adapt to the new standards and carry out the required tests. The guideline advises nationwide implementation of the material 12 to 36 months after release.
The standard's fifth edition (2012), its amendment 1 (2016), and its amendment 2 (2020) are all included in this condensed form. Therefore, in addition to this publication, there is no need to order further modifications. IEC 60335-1:2010 should also be read in combination with it.
