Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 1: General Requirements
Also Known As:
The safety standard IEC 60335-1:2020 focuses on electrical appliances used in homes and other similar settings. It covers appliances with a rated voltage of up to 480 V for other appliances, including DC and battery-operated ones, and 250 V for single-phase appliances. Appliances used in stores, light industries, farms, and other situations where there may be a risk to the public are also covered by the standard.
This standard's goal is to address the expected risks connected to this equipment. Children playing with the appliances or people with physical, sensory, or mental impairments that prevent them from using them securely are not taken into account. Appliances used in automobiles, on ships, or in aircraft, as well as in some situations that are country-specific, may require additional restrictions.
Appliances specifically made for industrial usage or those destined for areas with unique characteristics, including corrosive or explosive atmospheres, are exempt from the standard's requirements. It also doesn't include information technology equipment, medical electrical equipment, hand-held motor-operated tools, audio, video, or electronic apparatus, among other kinds of appliances.
IEC 60335-1:2020's sixth edition supersedes earlier iterations and adds a number of technical updates. These include adding test probes and appliance outlet/socket requirements, addressing moisture resistance, and introducing limits for voltage outputs during abnormal conditions. They also include updating references, changing notes to normative text, reclassifying annexes, providing guidance documents, and clarifying requirements for circuits, power measurements, and mechanical strength.
