Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-3: Particular requirements for electric irons
Also Known As:
A standard called IEC 60335-2-3:2012 focuses on the safety standards for electric irons used in homes and other settings. It includes steam and dry irons, as well as those with separate water reservoirs or boilers that can hold up to 5 liters of water. The standard is applicable to irons having a maximum rated voltage of 250 volts.
The standard addresses frequent risks connected to electric irons that people may experience inside and outside of their homes. However, it disregards people who might not have the skills and knowledge required to use the appliance safely without supervision or instruction or who may have physical, sensory, or mental limitations. Additionally, it excludes industrial or specialty irons made for use in particular environments or under particular circumstances.
The standard's sixth edition, which incorporates technical updates, replaces the edition that was first published in 2002. There are clarifications on pressure-tested hoses and the kinds of flexible cords that can be used, and several notes have been converted to normative text.
The standard suggests that after the publication of a new or updated standard, producers and testing organizations have a transitional period to adhere to the new requirements and carry out appropriate tests. Within 12 to 36 months of the publication date, it is also advised for national implementation.
