The safety standards for electric blankets, pads, clothes, and similar flexible heating appliances are the subject of the IEC 60335-2-17:2012+A1:2015 standard. It covers equipment used in homes and other similar situations with a rated voltage of up to 250 volts.The control panels that come with the appliances are also included in the standard.

This guideline takes into account the typical risks connected to this equipment that people may encounter inside and outside of their homes. The safety of people, particularly youngsters or those who have physical or mental disabilities, who might need supervision or specialized instructions to use the device properly, is not addressed.

This standard's third version, which was released in 2012 and amended in 2015, has undergone a number of changes. The definition for PTC heating elements was removed, and a definition for heating elements with PTC features was added, among other major modifications. The provision for class I appliances has been eliminated, and functional earth connection requirements have been added. 24 V has been set as the maximum working voltage for class III construction components. The test for heat stroke has also changed, as have the marking specifications and instructions.

It is advised that national committees adopt this document for implementation within 12 to 36 months of the publication date, accounting for the transitional time needed by equipment manufacturers and testing organizations to meet the new specifications and carry out the required tests.
