With a maximum rated voltage of 250 V, the IEC 60335-2-14:2016 standard focuses on the safety standards for electric kitchen appliances used in homes and other similar situations. Appliances used in stores, light industry, and farms are covered by the standard's scope, but those destined for professional food processing for commercial consumption are not. The standard does not evaluate the ability or lack of experience of those who would not be able to use the appliance safely without supervision or education, focusing instead on frequent risks that people meet in home situations.

Specific types of kitchen equipment, such as food waste disposers, ice-cream appliances with motor compressors, kitchen equipment intended for commercial or industrial use, and equipment used in locations with unique conditions like corrosive or explosive atmospheres, are exempt from the standard. The standard's sixth edition, which includes technical updates, replaces the fifth edition from 2006. The addition of specifications for noodle makers with mixing capabilities, updates to specifications for appliances with feed screws or augers, modifications to the definition of normal operation, modifications to the heating test method, and modifications to particular specifications are just a few of the noteworthy changes in the sixth edition.

Along with the most recent version of IEC 60335-1 and its updates, Part 2 of the standard should be used. National committees are informed that after the release of new or revised standards, equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period to comply with the updated requirements and carry out the required tests. The committee suggests that within 12 to 36 months after its publication, this standard be adopted nationally.
