Standard ENFR EN FRPreparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Visual assessment of surface cleanliness - Part 1: Rust grades and preparation grades of uncoated steel substrates and of steel substrates after overall removal of previous coatings
Also Known As:
ISO 8501-1:2007 is a standard that outlines the visual assessment of surface cleanliness for steel substrates prior to painting and the preparation grades used for achieving this cleanliness. The standard provides a series of rust grades and preparation grades of steel surfaces; each grade is defined by written descriptions accompanied by photographs as representative examples. The standard applies to hot-rolled steel surfaces prepared for painting, using methods such as blast-cleaning, hand and power tool cleaning, and flame cleaning, which are intended primarily for hot-rolled steel. However, blast-cleaning methods could also be applied to cold-rolled steel of sufficient thickness to withstand any deformation caused by abrasion or power tool cleaning. Finally, ISO 8501-1:2007 is applicable to steel substrates that show residues of firmly adhering paint and other foreign matter on top of residual mill scale.
