Dentistry - Manual Toothbrushes - General Requirements and Test Methods
Also Known As:
The standards and test procedures for the physical characteristics of manual toothbrushes are outlined in the ISO 20126:2022 standard. The goal is to guarantee that these items are safe for use as intended.
It's crucial to remember that this guideline does not apply to toothbrushes whose entire head is composed of elastomer material for the cleaning components. These toothbrushes must pass certain tests and standards.
The standard also forbids the use of motorized oral hygiene tools, single-use brushes, interdental brushes, and manual single-tuft toothbrushes. Through proper test procedures or clinical trials, these groups have their own methods for evaluating safety.
Additionally, it is stated that some types of filament materials, such as very thin filaments with an outer diameter less than 0.1 mm or non-synthetic filaments, are exempt from the end-rounding criteria for filaments. This is because using end-rounding methods on certain toothbrush types might not be appropriate or practical. Clinical trials or other suitable alternative test methods are used to assess the safety of these toothbrushes while they are in use.
