The ISO 7171:1988 standard outlines the procedures used in the furniture industry to determine the stability of storage units. This standard relates specifically to freestanding storage furniture such as cupboards, cabinets, and bookshelves that are completely constructed and ready for use. It should be noted that wall-mounted or built-in storage units are not covered by this standard.

The test findings obtained in accordance with this standard are solely valid for the individual article under consideration. If these findings are to be applied to other similar articles, the test specimen must be indicative of the production model. If this is not practicable, the test should nonetheless be performed as closely as possible to the prescribed protocol, with any deviations from the test procedure being noted.
