The standard recognizes that some ski-binding mechanisms may operate without regard to the sole's shape or may have differing demands for the sole's dimensions. To provide an acceptable level of safety in these situations, it might not be necessary for the ski boot soles to comply with ISO 9523:2008.

Ski boots that are sized using the Mondopoint system and are 15.0 sizes and larger must comply with ISO 9523:2008. However, Telemark boots and other footwear with softer shells are not included since they lack the essential shell solidity for the release systems.
