UL 842:2020 PDF Download

UL 842:2020 is a standard that covers valves designed to control flammable and combustible liquids and their vapors. The valves covered by this standard are commonly used in piping systems, fuel dispensing, and fuel-burning equipment. Manual, pressure, and temperature operated valves or combinations of them are included. The standard excludes valves that are wholly or partially operated by electricity and those that are intended for use under cryogenic conditions, in petroleum processing facilities, offshore and pipe-line terminals, natural gas processing plants, and gas distribution systems.

Valves covered by UL 842:2020 are suitable for use with flammable liquids at temperatures ranging from -29°C (-20°F) to 52°C (125°F). Relief valves and pressure regulators for liquefied petroleum gas (LP-Gas) service are also excluded from the scope of this standard. Additionally, manually operated gas valves of the plug and body or rotating disc type are evaluated in accordance with ANSI Z21.15. Valves covered by other standards such as Hose Nozzle Valves, Gas Appliance Pressure Regulators, Automatic Valves for Gas Appliances, Gas Appliance Thermostats, and Manually Operated Metallic Gas Valves are also excluded.

The Standard for Valves for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, UL 842:2020, does not evaluate the performance of products covered by the standard. Installation and use of valves are subject to applicable codes and regulations as determined by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). For example, in the United States, applicable codes and regulations include NFPA 30, NFPA 30A, and NFPA 31. In Canada, the National Fire Code of Canada, CSA B139, and provincial or other regulations apply.
