Standard EN SampleStandard for Cord Reels
Also Known As:
The UL 355:2021 standard specifies standards for both general-purpose cord reels and special-use cord reels that are meant to be attached to or within electrical utilization equipment such as appliances and portable lighting. These cord reels were created to adhere to NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code.
Additionally, this standard applies to cable reels used in a variety of settings, including factories, garages, commercial buildings, and construction sites, where additional protection against water, dust, or other contaminants may be required. It should be noted that this standard does not apply to cable reels used in dangerous environments.
According to this standard, a reel with or designed for use with a flexible cord is a cord reel. The reel has a mechanism for rewinding the cord onto the reel and enables the user to unwind the cord as needed. Some cord reels have a catch to keep the spring take-up mechanism safe while in use, and the mechanism for extending or retracting the cord may or may not be motor-driven.
In accordance with the standards of UL 943, the Standard for Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters, cord reels may also include Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets at the load connection.
Additionally, cord reels are permitted to use a variety of power supplies, such as receptacles with integrated power supplies and Class 2, LPS, PS1, or PS2 output connectors; specialty power units with integral Class 2 output connectors; or Class 2 output connectors on limited power source (LPS), PS1, or PS2 power supplies.
