Standard ENUnvented Alcohol Fuel Burning Decorative Appliances
Also Known As:
UL 1370:2016 standard applies to the factory-built decorative appliances that burn liquid or gelled alcohol fuel without the need for a vent. These appliances are non-moveable, and they include wall-mounted and floor-mounted appliances, fireplace grates that are installed in existing masonry fireplaces, and combustion chambers that are installed into fabricated enclosures. As the appliances are decorative and not intended to function as a primary source of heat, they are limited to a maximum input rate of 0.25 gallons of fuel per hour. It is important to note that these appliances are not intended to be used as cooking appliances, and they are not suitable for use in an area where flammable gases or vapors are present. Additionally, blower assemblies should not be used in conjunction with these appliances.
The appliances are required to have a burning chamber, an overall enclosure, and provisions for refueling. While they are meant to be installed in occupancies where local codes permit the use of the appliances, these codes should comply with the requirements of UL 1370:2016. Examples of such codes may include NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code, and NFPA 101, Life Safety Code. The fireplace grates do not require an integral enclosure, as they use existing fireplaces as their enclosures.
