The standard UL 180:2021 addresses the design and functionality specifications for tank accessories used on atmospheric aboveground tanks that hold and provide motor oils, diesel fuels, and other flammable liquids. The standard specifies safety standards for tank accessories that assess fire and environmental risks, structural integrity, and functional operation.

This standard covers fill signal devices, aboveground piping systems, fill pipe covers, and vent pipe caps as tank accessories. According to the manufacturer's instructions, these accessories are to be installed in, on, or linked to the storage or supply tank.

According to the standard, tank accessories for products covered by other specific requirements, such as electrical liquid level gauges, electrical fill signal devices, underground piping systems, leak detection tools, fill pipe covers, and vents, as well as spill containment tools, overfill prevention tools, filters, and strainers, as well as larger diameter piping for flammable and combustible liquids, are not covered by it.

The goods covered by this standard are meant to be installed and used in conformity with any codes and regulations that may be in force as established by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). The NFPA 30, NFPA 30A, NFPA 31, NFPA 1, International Fire Code, and other federal and state rules are among the applicable codes in the United States. The standard excludes compliance with FCC or Industry Canada rules for electrical devices with signal characteristics as well as particular evaluations for resistance to electromagnetic interference, resistance to natural catastrophes, or vehicle impact. Additionally, it excludes the use of accessories with combustible liquids that have different physical or material compatibility features, hazardous locations, waste oils with significant impurities, or flammable liquid applications.
