Standard for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles
Also Known As:
Various electrical equipment intended for connection to a branch circuit and use in conformity with the National Electrical Code is covered by the UL 498:2021 standard. This contains flatiron and appliance plugs, as well as attachment plugs, receptacles, cord connectors, inlets, current taps, and wiring terminals for flexible cord.
It's crucial to remember that the standard does not cover equipment with ratings of more than 200 A or more than 600 V. Furthermore, even though this standard does not directly apply to some devices, it may supplement other standards such as UL 817 for products made with flexible cord, UL 498A for current taps and adapters without wiring terminals for flexible cord, UL 496 for products using male or female screwshells (lampholders), UL 1682 for products with pin-and-sleeve type connectors, and numerous other standards listed in the description.
A number of supplements are also included in the UL 498:2021 standard, including enclosure types for environmental protection, maritime shore power inlets, hospital-grade devices, weather-resistant outlets, outlets with inbuilt power supplies and Class 2 output connectors, and recessed outlet kit assemblies.
