UL 62841-1:2020 standard covers the safety requirements for hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. This includes electric motor-operated or magnetically driven tools with a rated voltage of not more than 250 V for single-phase AC or DC tools and 480 V for three-phase AC tools, and a rated input of not more than 3700 W. The standard deals with the hazards that may arise during the normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of the tools, and requirements for batteries and rechargeable battery-powered motor-operated or magnetically driven tools are specified.

However, the standard does not apply to tools intended for use in the presence of an explosive atmosphere, tools used for preparing and processing food or for medical purposes, tools used with cosmetics or pharmaceutical products, heating tools, electrical equipment for industrial machine-tools, or small low voltage transformer-operated bench tools for model making.
